'Tis the season

A few days ago Starbucks rolled out its Christmas Blend, and the inside of the cafe is all green and red...damn, the Xmas season gets earlier and earlier every year. But I have to say, it's working. I'm already thinking about gifts and whistling Xmas carols with still a week to go until the turkey gets basted.

Almost time for me to break out the Bing Crosby Christmas album, and the Frank Sinatra Christmas album. And the "Christmas in Germany" album.

Traditional carols I like:
Es ist ein Ros' Entsprungen
The Boar's Head Carol
In Dulci Jubilo
Once in Royal David's City
Silent Night
Angels from the Realms of Glory
In the Bleak Midwinter (both melodies)
The Friendly Beasts

Traditional Carols I kind of dislike:
The Coventry Carol
I Saw Three Ships

Modern Christmas songs I kind of like:

White Christmas
I'll Be Home for Christmas
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
It's Cold Outside (completely secular, I know)
Walking in a Winter Wonderland (ditto)

Modern Christmas Songs I Loathe:

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Jingle Bells
Up on the Rooftop
The Little Drummer Boy

The best Christmas song ever is "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses...or possibly "2000 Miles" by the Pretenders.

The greatest rendition of a Christmas song I've ever heard was at Irish Eyes. Some old guy performed his rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy." He was really drunk and really into it.

And, of course, who can forget Andy Williams singing "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year"

For the greatest Christmas album ever, check out "A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector." It's magical.

My vote for the worst Christmas Song Ever goes to Paul McCartney and Wings for "Wonderful Christmas Time."

(not Sven)

I'd be interested to hear Chris's review of the Christmas songs by Jethro Tull.

I've never heard their Christmas album...but I did look at the reviews on Amazon, and those people absolutely love it. Maybe I will get the chance to listen to it this season?
